History Past
The Hot Springs on this property have been used for centuries. It is said that the Towa people (the Jemez Indians), used these waters for healing and that these springs were considered 'sacred'. The Bath House on this property was built in the mid 1800's, and was in operation until a flood in 1951. One of the family's that owned the Bath House when it was working was the Abousleman family. (the big white house across from the Los Ojos Bar and Restaurant). Tom Abousleman, 83 years old, still lives there today. He lived with his sister Josephine, up until May 2001, when she passed away at the age of 94. They have told us many stories regarding this property and the Hot Spring water here. You may be interested to hear a couple of them.
"A man was brought to the Village to stay at the Mathias place across the road ... he had such terrible arthritis that they brought him in on a stretcher as he could not walk on his own. Everyday, they brought him over to soak in the waters. After a month of daily soaking, he ran from the springs, over to the Abousleman house, and up their back stairs to tell them that he had been healed ..."
"Another man had very bad corns on his feet, which caused him a great deal of pain. He came over to help the Albouslemans clean out their hot water well. He had to work standing in the hot water for most of the day ... when he got out of the water, his corns were completely gone ...!"
Over the years, many people have claimed that these hot springs waters have healed various ailments and that they have medicinal qualities. Josephine recalled many people with arthritis coming by stagecoach, and spending the summer here to soak in the waters... she also recalled many of them leaving without the symptoms of arthritis.
Of course, we cannot authenticate any of these stories, so whether you believe the water to be healing is left entirely up to you. We do ask, however, that you regard the Springs with respect, appreciation and a positive attitude. It's a great place to relax and meditate, or to quietly enjoy the company of friends. Near the hot pool is a grotto where many guests have left offerings, feel free to browse or leave one of your own while here!
Also, please read a copy of our rules and recommendations pertaining to the use of the Hot Springs before soaking.
Thank You!
